• A thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist scroll painting, often with Buddhas or mandalas. THANG KA is a Tibetan word which means so much as ‘recorded message’.
• In Tibet, the painting of thangkas was an important and highly developed means of expression through which the entire Buddhist philosophy could be explained.

Thangkas typically depict important Buddhist motifs, the Wheel of Life, images of the Buddha, other Buddhist deities and mandalas being the most common. Thangka paintings are usually very intricate and detailed, with images inter-woven in a stytised geometric series of overlapping grids, taking many weeks or even months to complete.
